A Club Med type experience in Crete
My husband recently attended a scientific conference that was held at the Agapi Beach Hotel, and I was lucky enough to be able to tag along.
Please note, this hotel is NOT in Heraklion, it is 4 kilometers down the road. If you are on an active vacation around Crete, seeing the sites and the antiquities, this is not for you. It is a BEAUTIFUL all inclusive, Club Med type resort. Our room was absolutely gorgeous, with a small sitting room attached and a lovely balcony overlooking the pool, the gardens, and the Meditteranean Sea. The serve 3 buffet meals a day that are delicious and absolutely overwhelming. The guests, of course, are mostly Europeans. The vast majority were German. There are direct flights from many cities in Europe to Heraklion.
The staff is helpful and polite. We were there in April, so it was not quite the tourist season and not all of their facilities were open, but there are 3 pools, and some entertainment at night. Taxi into Heraklion is 8 euros, so it's quite accessible.
I don't know why anybody would go all the way to Crete to have a beach vacation. But if that's what you have in mind, this is a great place.
